Development of a New 180kHz Ultrasonic Nozzle Creates Smaller Drop Sizes for Precision Medical Device CoatingsMilton, NY — January 23, 2009 — (HSMN NewsFeed) - Sono-Tek Corporation announces the development of a new 180kHz ultrasonic atomizing nozzle with a characteristic median drop size of 13 microns (based on atomizing water) for use in coating precision medical devices. The nozzle operates by atomizing liquid using high-frequency sound vibrations (at 180kHz) caused by exciting piezoelectric transducers inside of the nozzle body. An electrical signal fed into two electrodes sandwiched between the piezoelectric transducers forming continuous vibrations down the nozzle’s titanium horn, creating a uniform spray of atomized droplets as the liquid emerges onto the atomizing surface. Featuring Titanium and stainless steel construction, Sono-Tek ultrasonic nozzles are durable and resistant to chemical attack. The comparatively large liquid feed orifice and ultrasonic vibration of the nozzle make it a virtually non-clogging device.
The 180kHz nozzle is capable of atomizing solvents such as THF, acetone, DMAC, toluene, chloroform and polymers including urethanes, polycarbonates, silicones and styrenes. This makes it particularly well suited to precision spray applications such as medical device coatings. The low velocity spray and uniform small droplet size capable with the 180kHz nozzle can provide superior thin film coatings to devices with complex geometries such as implantable stents, without any overspray or webbing of the polymer. Tight drop distributions further increase uniformity of coatings.
Sono-Tek is world renowned for supplying precision ultrasonic atomizing technology to the medical industry for decades, in several applications including cardiac and peripheral implantable stent coating, blood collection tube coating, microencapsulation, antimicrobial coating of surgical gauze and medical textiles, and catheter and guide wire coatings.
