South Fulton Medical Center First in Georgia to Purchase Prosurgics' FreeHand(R) Laparoscopic Camera Controller

CUPERTINO, CA - (HSMN NewsFeed) - Surgical robotics company Prosurgics announces today the first sale of a FreeHand laparoscopic camera controller in Georgia.

Supporting the Atlanta metro area, the South Fulton Medical Center is a modern facility known for medical innovation and state-of-the-art equipment. Two top surgeons, Dr. Kevin Edmonds and Dr. Vijaykumar Patel, performed a series of surgeries this fall using FreeHand. Dr. Edmonds, an OB/GYN surgeon, used it for laparoscopic hysterectomies and other cases. Dr. Patel, a general surgeon, performed several other types of surgeries, including a colon resection.

FreeHand is a 15 lb. robotic device that gives surgeons direct control of the laparoscopic camera via a small, lightweight hands-free controller worn on the surgeon's head. Gentle head movements permit precise scope positioning and a rock-steady image, and faster surgery after a very rapid learning curve. FreeHand can be used to hold the laparoscope for all minimally invasive laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures.

Bill Perry, President of Prosurgics Inc., said, "We are delighted that FreeHand is now being used at South Fulton. In addition to being affordable, FreeHand is the latest in advanced laparoscopic surgery technology and optimizes patient care in numerous surgical specialties. It is used widely in Europe, and this purchase represents another positive step in our rapidly expanding U.S. growth."

"The Freehand device facilitates minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgery. Therefore the patient only has three small incisions, each smaller than the tip of your finger," says Kevin Edmonds, M.D., OB/GYN. "The device gives me and the surgical team the ability to work quickly and efficiently. The patient recovers 50% faster than traditional surgical methods and is usually back to regular activities within days. The incision is so small, future scarring is very minimal or none at all."
