Cook Medical Wins Contract with Novation, Provides 40,000 Health Care Organizations Access to Full Line of Advanced Tissue Repair TechnologyExpanded partnership reflects market shift toward cost-effective, biologic tissue repair treatments for enhanced patient outcomes
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--More than 40,000 U.S. health care providers will gain access to special pricing and terms for an advanced biologic graft for soft tissue repair through a contractual relationship between Cook Medical and Novation, the leading health care supply company for VHA Inc., University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) and Provista, LLC. Under the agreement, effective April 1, 2010, Cook will supply Novation members with its full line of Biodesign® Advanced Tissue Repair products, intended to treat a wide range of soft tissue defects and related conditions.
This agreement marks the third installment of contracts between the two organizations featuring the Biodesign product family. In 2009, Cook became the sole provider of biologic grafts for the treatment of two common pelvic floor disorders, pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. This past January, Cook was awarded an agreement for the Biodesign Fistula Plug, a minimally invasive alternative to traditional fistula repair procedures. Now, with this expanded contract, Novation’s vast network of hospitals and health care providers will obtain access to the additional Biodesign applications designed to treat five types of hernias, including inguinal, umbilical, hiatal/paraesophageal, incisional and ventral hernias, as well as staple line reinforcement for use during bariatric surgery.
“Market demand for safe, effective biologic grafts has been on the rise for some time now, with a noteworthy upsurge over the past year as physician preference clearly shifted toward biologic grafts for a number of procedures,” said Pete Yonkman, Cook Medical’s executive vice president of sales and marketing. “We are pleased about the opportunity to provide our full line of Biodesign products to Novation’s extensive group of members and look forward to continuing our partnership with a shared emphasis on better patient outcomes.”
Biodesign is an evolution of soft tissue repair, addressing physicians’ needs for an advanced biologic graft. Once implanted, Biodesign communicates with the body, signaling surrounding tissue to grow across the scaffold, allowing the body to restore itself. Biodesign completely remodels into fully vascularized tissue that becomes stronger over time, providing a permanent repair without a permanent material. Biodesign combines the best attributes of biologic grafts–resistance to infection and complete remodeling–with the added benefits of moderate price, ease of use and widespread availability. Introduced by Cook in 1995 and manufactured in the Cook Biotech facility in West Lafayette, Ind., the grafts have been used in more than one million procedures and 97 countries to treat hernias, fistulas, stress urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and Peyronie’s disease, as well as in staple line reinforcement for bariatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and wound care. To date, over 800 peer-reviewed articles have been published on the technology behind Biodesign.
