Nursing Consortium Releases Consensus Paper on the Use of Intraosseous Vascular Access for Emergent and Non-Emergent SituationsSAN ANTONIO--(Healthcare Sales & Marketing Network)-- The Consortium on Intraosseous vascular access for Emergent and Nonemergent Situations in Various Healthcare Settings has released a consensus paper that recommends intraosseous (IO) vascular access be considered as an alternative to peripheral or central IV access in a variety of healthcare settings.
The consortium is composed of the Infusion Nurses Society (INS), Society of Pediatric Nurses, Air & Transport Nurses Association, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, and Emergency Nurses Association. The paper, “Recommendations for the Use of Intraosseous Access for Emergent and Nonemergent Situations in Various Healthcare Settings: A Consensus Paper,” recommends that IO be considered as an alternative to peripheral or central IV access in the intensive care unit, high-acuity/progressive care floors, general medical floor and chronic care and long-term care settings.
“Intraosseous access is being increasingly adopted across a wide spectrum of uses in emergent and non-emergent situations, and this consortium’s consensus further illustrates the support within the medical community of adopting IO technology to improve patient safety and care,” commented Mark Mellin, Acting President and CEO of Vidacare Corporation. Vidacare’s EZ-IO® vascular access System, the market leader in IO technology, is used by 90 percent of US advanced life support ambulances and over half of US Emergency Departments, as well as the US Military.
