Healthcare Industry News: Prefense system

Nihon Kohden America’s New Patient Monitoring Technology Reduces False Alarms by Greater Than 80%
FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif.--(Healthcare Sales & Marketing Network)-- Nihon Kohden America announced today that its new smoothing algorithm has received 510k clearance and will immediately be incorporated into the company’s Prefense™ Early Detection and Notification System™. The smoothing algorithm will be introduced at the National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (NTI). The technology represents an important advancement in patient safety and quality of care, as false alarms often lead to “alarm fatigue” among nursing staff and could result in non-responsiveness to deteriorating patient conditions. This advanced algorithm changes dynamically over time to “smooth out” anomalies and provide an accurate representation of a patient’s condition. This is especially important when providing continuous surveillance to the Med/Surg floors, where nurses traditionally monitored patients manually by spot checks every four hours. The combination of the Prefense system and smoothing algorithm now provides constant surveillance while reducing false alarms. Nurses get alarms they can trust with a reduction of false alarms by greater than 80%.
“The introduction of our smoothing algorithm is an important step to improving quality and clinical efficiency in hospitals,” said Mike Dashefsky, vice president of Nihon Kohden America. “This technology will allow nurses to spend more time on patient care without having to respond to an inordinate amount of false alarms.”
The algorithm and the Prefense system will be demonstrated at NTI in Chicago from May 3-5, 2011, Booth #3629.
