Tekmira Strengthens Development Team With Appointment of Dr. Mark Kowalski as Chief Medical OfficerVANCOUVER, British Columbia, Aug. 12, 2013 -- (Healthcare Sales & Marketing Network) -- Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation (TKMR) (TKM.TO), a leading developer of RNA interference (RNAi) therapeutics, announced today that Dr. Mark Kowalski, M.D., Ph.D. has joined its team as Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President.
"Mark brings to Tekmira over 25 years of experience in academic and clinical research, as well as clinical drug development through his work at major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, where he has led product development, clinical development, and regulatory affairs. In particular, Mark's depth of experience in oncology will support our ongoing plans to advance TKM-PLK1, our lead oncology product, which is proceeding into a number of clinical trials evaluating efficacy in specific cancer indications," said Dr. Mark J. Murray, Tekmira's President and CEO.
"Over the last decade, Tekmira has been at the forefront of key innovations enabling RNAi therapeutics, and Tekmira's LNP technology has produced multiple promising sets of human clinical data. Today, our focus is on expanding and advancing Tekmira's pipeline of proprietary products -- including TKM-PLK1, TKM-Ebola and promising preclinical candidates -- in order to bring new treatments to patients and maximize value for our shareholders. The newly created CMO position further defines our focus on therapeutic products, and we believe Mark will contribute significantly to our goals moving forward," added Dr. Murray.
Dr. Kowalski has extensive experience in Phase I through Phase IV drug development and clinical trials in a wide variety of therapeutic areas including oncology, urology, infectious diseases, analgesia, allergy, rheumatology and cardiovascular diseases. About RNAi and Tekmira's LNP
RNAi therapeutics have the potential to treat a broad number of human diseases by "silencing" disease causing genes. The discoverers of RNAi, a gene silencing mechanism used by all cells, were awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. RNAi therapeutics, such as "siRNAs," require delivery technology to be effective systemically. Tekmira believes its LNP technology represents the most widely adopted delivery technology for the systemic delivery of RNAi therapeutics. Tekmira's LNP platform is being utilized in multiple clinical trials by both Tekmira and its partners. Tekmira's LNP technology (formerly referred to as stable nucleic acid-lipid particles or SNALP) encapsulates siRNAs with high efficiency in uniform lipid nanoparticles that are effective in delivering RNAi therapeutics to disease sites in numerous preclinical models. Tekmira's LNP formulations are manufactured by a proprietary method which is robust, scalable and highly reproducible, and LNP-based products have been reviewed by multiple FDA divisions for use in clinical trials. LNP formulations comprise several lipid components that can be adjusted to suit the specific application.
Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation is a biopharmaceutical company focused on advancing novel RNAi therapeutics and providing its leading lipid nanoparticle delivery technology to pharmaceutical partners. Tekmira has been working in the field of nucleic acid delivery for over a decade and has broad intellectual property covering LNPs.
