I am currently a medical speech-language pathologist with 6 years experience with adult neurological, voice, and swallowing disorders. I am considering a career transition into medical sales, but am wondering what my chances are of getting hired with no real "sales" experience. Should I stay put or consider a career change? Has anyone made a career change to medical sales on this forum, and if so, what advice would you give?

In general, if you don't have 2-3 years of relevant medical sales experience, then many of the physician recruitment agencies, hiring managers and medical sales recruiters will not consider you and your application. This is my experience at least, you might get lucky. In some rare cases, as you know sometimes we get lucky, so it might be that someone will consider you without experience depending on their availability, your personality and skills, or some other factor that fits their needs. They are probably looking for individuals with a strong sales or even clinical background, or someone with a competitive spirit. If you are professional, dependable, and can take direction and also operate independently, then you could be on their prospective list. To get the attention of recruiters you should develop a great resume. Design it on your own or get more professional looking resumes written by a professional resume writer. Better yet, consider developing a simple yet catching website to showcase yourself. You can even make a simple drag-and-drop free website using online tools like wix or others. I've seen things like that help engage interest or curiosity in employers before. Be sure to highlight your strengths and accomplishments, and get some strong references to let the hiring personnel know that you can be a strength to their team.
