Dr. Miles Gregory Johnston Receives Medtronic Award of Excellence for Research in Cerebrospinal Fluid Physiology

MINNEAPOLIS--(HSMN NewsFeed)--The Neurosurgery business at Medtronic today announced that Miles Gregory Johnston, Ph.D. has been selected to receive the Robert H. Pudenz Award for Excellence in Cerebrospinal fluid Physiology for the year 2006. Presented annually since 1989, this award is named in honor of Robert H. Pudenz who was a recognized pioneer in the field of pediatric neurosurgery, research in cerebrospinal fluid physiology, and cerebrospinal fluid shunt technology for the treatment of hydrocephalus. The award is determined by a special selection committee established by the Neurosurgery business at Medtronic and is comprised of previous awardees.

Dr. Johnston is professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Toronto, Canada. He holds joint appointments as senior scientist, Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Science Center. He is a member of many national and international research and clinical societies. His research has been wide ranging in the field of experimental and clinical hydrocephalus. He has presented and published important studies defining the role of the lymphatic system in cerebrospinal fluid transport. Dr. Johnston’s experimental studies have provided a clear understanding on the normal mechanism involved in the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid and the role of the lymphatic system in the development of hydrocephalus. He is well known for his skill as a teacher within undergraduate and graduate biological neurosciences.

The award will be presented to Dr. Johnston during a special ceremony at The Estates of Sunnybrook on Wednesday, December 5, 2007. A $7,500 cash grant will be given to the Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Science Center to fund basic research in hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid physiology, along with a $1,000 cash grant to the hydrocephalus Association, in honor of Dr. Johnston.
