Tampa Area's First Single Incision Surgical Procedure Performed at University of South Florida

NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut, Nov 15, 2007--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Covidien Ltd. (NYSE: COV, BSX: COV), a leading global provider of healthcare products, announced today the completion of the first reported Single Incision Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication procedure, eliminating any visible scar on the patient’s abdomen. This procedure, for treatment of esophageal reflux disease, was performed by Dr. Alexander Rosemurgy at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Also at Tampa General Hospital, Dr. Michael Albrink recently completed two Single Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy procedures.

Dr. Rosemurgy and Dr. Albrink were able to successfully perform the procedures through a single skin incision located in the patients’ umbilicus, or belly button. Several advanced articulated instruments from Covidien’s Surgical Devices business unit enabled improved access to the surgical site and maneuverability for tissue dissection and retraction. Customized solutions are being investigated to enable similar Single Incision Laparoscopic procedures for other general surgery, urologic, gynecologic, and bariatric surgery applications.

“Our collaboration with Dr. Rosemurgy and Dr. Albrink on these innovative procedures demonstrates that fewer incisions are possible, and represents a significant step toward the ultimate goal of incisionless surgery that may improve patient outcomes,” said Scott Flora, President, Surgical Devices, Covidien.

“We completed a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication utilizing only one incision, rather than the usual four or five incisions,” said Dr. Rosemurgy. “We have undertaken a number of laparoscopic cholecystectomies utilizing only one incision, rather than the usual three or four. This approach offers tremendous benefits to our patients, and I believe that single incision laparoscopy will soon become the “state-of-the-art” procedure for many of my future cases,” added Dr. Rosemurgy.

Covidien is actively working with surgeons around the world to explore even less invasive approaches for surgery, including surgery performed through the body’s natural orifices. Most recently, the company established the Covidien NOTES Research Fund in conjunction with NOSCARTM (Natural Orifice Surgery Consortium for Assessment and Research) designed to support clinical research in key technological areas of natural orifice surgery, including peritoneal access, suturing and anastomotic devices.

“Laparoscopic procedures undertaken through a single incision are a significant advancement. While laparoscopy traditionally offers care with less pain and improved cosmesis, laparoscopy undertaken through a single incision dramatically extends these benefits. While laparoscopy was a seminal advancement in surgery a decade ago, laparoscopy utilizing a single incision is a seminal advancement in laparoscopy today. For our profession and for our patients, the future is brighter and more hopeful than ever,” stated Dr. Albrink.
