Pharmaceutical Brands Require Human Moderation on Social Media Far More Than Any Other Industry, New ICUC Report Finds
Analysis of 2.7 million real brand-consumer interactions shows pharma's moderation burden is more than four times the cross-industry average, underscoring the limits of automation in regulated marketing[MONTREAL, QC] — [July 2026] -- (Healthcare Sales & Marketing Network) -- ICUC, a global agency specializing in social media management, content moderation, digital customer care, and social listening services, released its 2026 Community Management Report, an analysis built from 2.7 million real brand-consumer interactions the company managed between January and June of this year. Among the report's key findings: pharmaceutical brands needed a human moderator to intervene on 20.5% of public social media interactions — the highest rate of any industry measured, and more than four times the roughly 4% average seen across most other sectors.
The report attributes pharma's outsized moderation burden to the unique regulatory environment the industry operates under. Compliance requirements, adverse event reporting, misinformation risk, and off-label discussion all raise the bar for what needs human review versus what can be safely automated, which is a distinction the report's data suggests many brands are still working to get right.
"We're entering a time in social marketing where every comment section is a focus group," said Nicole van Zanten, Chief Growth Officer at ICUC. "Brands that actively listen and engage will have a strong competitive advantage over those relying solely on traditional research or insights driven by tools only."
The report's broader findings reinforce that automation, even where it is used, is not replacing human judgment. Across all industries in the dataset, 46% of interactions were handled entirely by a person, and the remaining 54% used automation only in an assistive capacity (for classification, tagging, and routing) before a human analyst reviewed and acted on the result.
"The volume of conversations isn't what matters most," van Zanten said. "What really matters is understanding the conversations that require human intervention and why. That's where experience, governance, and strong, experienced community management become differentiators for brands."
For regulated industries in particular, the findings point to a widening gap between brands that treat automation as a wholesale replacement for community management and those that use it as one layer within a larger, human-governed system.
"The organizations that win won't necessarily have the most advanced tech," van Zanten said. "They'll be the ones that combine AI with human expertise to respond faster, identify risks earlier, and create more meaningful customer relationships."
About the Report
ICUC's 2026 Community Management Report is based on the company's in-house tracking of more than 3.3 million online interactions, of which 2,712,378 were managed on behalf of clients between January 1, 2026, and June 1, 2026. Industries are included in industry-level findings only where ICUC managed interactions for at least five unique businesses using the relevant management method, a threshold applied to ensure findings are based on a sufficiently broad sample and to protect client confidentiality.
